Social Impact Heroes Helping Our Planet

“I knew I wanted to do something to help not only people, but the plants and animals that also call San Diego home. San Diego is home to more endangered plants and animals than anywhere else in the continental US. I might not be able to remove all threats to these plants and animals, but I can help remove one obstacle to their survival and give them a clean and safe place to call home.”

Beauty and the beach: Miss Earth USA participants finish mission trip in La Jolla

On July 24, the women worked with members of Friends of Rose Creek and Butler’s nonprofit We Clean Trails to remove 1,040 pounds of trash from the Rose Creek bike path, a cleanup that occurs bimonthly.

As the reigning titleholder of Miss Earth USA, an environmentally focused competition, Butler brought the yearly mission trip to various spots in her hometown to expose the participants to the local environmental organizations she works with.

Earth Day 2021

Earth Day 2021 brought more than a dozen volunteers to the La Jolla coast for a beach cleanup.

The April 22 collection netted 21.5 pounds of trash.

The group met when the tide was lower at 10 a.m. at the gazebo overlooking the Children’s Pool to distribute gloves, trash bags, trash pickers and more before dispersing north and south, clearing the walkways, bushes and beaches between Shell Beach and South Casa Beach.

Butler has a lengthy resume in environmental activism. She currently leads a trail head clean-up program out in San Diego called We Clean Trails. She said her passion for environmental causes stems from her "Maine roots."

"In Standish, there was a wildlife preserve right bordering my house so I had a lot of exposure to animals at a very young age," she said. "My mom would often volunteer for the Center for Wildlife in Maine, helping rehabilitate animals... So I had a lot of animals coming in and out of our house as a kid, a lot of exposure to it!"
